Minutes of SDC Meeting August 9, 2016
Call to order by Chair David Bottenfield at 7:00 PM. Democrats from Staunton, Waynesboro and Augusta County in attendance for the early (7 PM) joint portion. Notes reflect discussions at both segments, joint and Staunton.
Approval of Minutes: A motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes of the Called Meeting of 12 July pursuant to two minor corrections of the draft. Minutes were passed unanimously.
Treasurer’s Report: The Treasurer Ken Venable reported a balance of $573.10. A motion was made and seconded to approve the Treasurer’s report.
Kai Degner campaign: Julie Scofield reported that she was now serving as Kai’s campaign manager and introduced Lorie McMillan as her replacement in charge of Staunton, Waynesboro and Augusta County. The campaign priority was said to be fundraising. Julie said that there was a need for volunteers with ‘Van List’ aptitude as the campaign was purchasing the Van List. Multiple events for the Degner campaign are listed on the http://www.kaiforcongress.com website.
Young Democrats: Laura Kleiner reported that the group is conducting a voter registration drive with 14 registered this year thus far. The YD also are using the Pokemon application and have three new members .
6th District Information: There was no 6th District meeting during the last two months.
Coordinated Campaign: Julia Templeman introduced herself as the recent hire based out of Roanoke who will be in the Staunton area on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. She asked for volunteers to assist with a voter registration effort in Gypsy Hill Park the following weekend. Her email address is JTempleman@vavictory2016.org and her phone number is 757-345-9767. Several committee members expressed dismay over a perceived lack of respect towards local Democrats by the Clinton national and Virginia campaigns given the lack of funding to support down-ballot efforts.
Old Business: Frank Nolen of Augusta County briefed on the Augusta County Fair. Candidate Kai Degner made an appearance at the Fair. Frank also informed that the previously ordered Clinton-Degner election signs would be delivered in a couple of weeks.
New Business: African-American Heritage Celebration: 17-18 September. David Bottenfield reported on the refusal of the organizing committee to waive the $135 retail vendor fee for us to have a stand. A general consensus was reached to do the festival only if a lower fee could be negotiated, and if not, to try to at least walk through the event spaces, registering voters and handing out election materials. Paint the Valley Blue 2016 (7-9 October) David Bottenfield proposed that an event be held over the Columbus Day Weekend) He offered a building site downtown at Black Dog Bikes. The event should include guest speakers, beer sales, and food trucks and take place from about 5-8 PM on one of the three evenings of 7, 8, or 9 October. Julie thought that Kai would be otherwise occupied at another previously scheduled event. There was enthusiasm expressed with this idea. Storefront Election HQ: David suggested that he may donate use of such a location if the campaigns could jointly agree to man the facility. Email Solicitations: David invited all interested persons to join him on 10 August at his business office to develop a mailing list for potential contributors who could be sent traditional letters informing them of the SDC need for funds to buy signage and support democratic candidates.
Next Meeting: Tuesday, 13 September, 7 PM meeting, at Staunton City Hall.
Meeting adjourned at 8:20 PM.
Phil Minez, Acting Secretary
