June Meeting – Note Changes to Time

The June 2015 joint meeting of the Staunton and Augusta County Democratic Committees will be held Tuesday, June 9, 2015, starting no later than 1915 at the Staunton City Council Chambers in City Hall. Individual committee meetings will be held after the joint meeting adjourns. Please come into City Hall through the police department entrance on Central Avenue and take the elevator UP one floor.

Also please join members from both committees at the Clock Tower Restaurant Happy Hour at 1800, before the meeting. The Clock Tower Restaurant is on Beverley Street, one block east of City Hall.

TO NOMINATE A DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR
VIRGINIA 20TH HOUSE OF DELEGATES DISTRICT

The Virginia 20th House of Delegates District Nominating Committee (Nominating Committee) will hold an assembled caucus on Saturday, June 6, 2015, beginning at noon at the Staunton Public Library, 2nd Floor Meeting Room, 1 Churchville Avenue, Staunton, Virginia, for the purpose of nominating a Democratic candidate for the Virginia House of Delegates, 20th District (HoD, 20th District).

Candidate Filing: Each person seeking to become the Democratic nominee for the office of the HoD, 20th District shall file a Declaration of Candidacy form with the Waynesboro City Democratic Committee (WDC) no earlier than 12:00 PM, Sunday, May 31, 2015, and no later than 5:00 PM, Wednesday, June 3, 2015. There is no filing fee. Filings shall be made either in person or by mail with the Chair of the Nominating Committee, Dan Sullivan, 215 Crompton Road, Waynesboro, Virginia 22980. Only those candidates who have timely and properly filed their Declarations of Candidacy form may have their names placed in Nomination. The order of the Candidates’ names on the ballot shall be determined by the order they are received. Should two or more filings be received at the same time, a random drawing will take place to determine the order, and should this occur, the campaigns of these filings will be notified and will be allowed to have representative present at the drawing, which take place at 5:00 PM, Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at 215 Crompton Road, Waynesboro, Virginia 22980. The Declaration of Candidacy form shall be available via the Waynesboro Democratic Committee website: http://waynesboro-democratic-committee.ruck.us, the 6th District Democratic Committee website: http://6thdistrictva.com, and the Democratic Party of Virginia website: www.vademocrats.org.

Qualifications of Candidates: The Declaration of Candidacy form, published on the above websites by 5:30 PM, Friday, May 15, 2015, which the candidate must sign, will include a written declaration that the candidate:

  1. Is a Democrat and not a member of any other political party; and
  2. Does not intend to support any candidate who is opposed to the Democratic nominee in the HoD, 20th District General Election; and
  3. Has not participated in and will not participate in the nominating process of any other party for the HoD, 20th District General Election; and
  4. Does not intend to file as an independent candidate for the HoD, 20th District General Election; and
  5. Is registered to vote in the HoD, 20th District.

Notice: This call to caucus shall be published on the democratic committees’ websites (listed above) in the 6th Congressional District Democratic Committee and/or the Democratic Party of Virginia (DPVA) website. A press release shall be provided to all relevant newspapers of general circulation in the HoD, 20th District. The committees will be encouraged to disseminate this information to all interested parties, as they are able, in accordance with the Party Plan of Affirmative Action provisions of the Party Plan of the DPVA.

Participation: Every Democrat who is a registered voter in the HoD, 20th District is urged to attend and participate. Each participant must sign a written declaration that he or she:

  1. Is a Democrat and not a member of any other political party; and
  2. Does not intend to support any candidate who is opposed to the Democratic nominee in the HoD, 20th District General Election; and
  3. Has not participated in and will not participate in the nominating process of any other party for the HoD, 20th District General Election; and
  4. Is registered to vote in the HoD, 20th District.

Determination of Nominee: If only one person files properly to be a candidate for the Democratic nomination for the HoD, 20th District by the filing deadline, the Nominating Committee may cancel the caucus and declare that person the nominee. If no person files properly to be a candidate for the Democratic nomination for the HoD, 20th District by the filing deadline, the Nominating Committee may cancel the caucus.

At any time before 5 PM ET, Wednesday, June 3, the Chair of the HoD, 20th District Nominating Committee may rule ineligible for nomination any candidate who has been found to have made any false or misleading statements on the Declaration of Candidacy.

If there is no filed candidate, or if the properly nominated candidate withdraws or dies, the Chair of the Nominating Committee may convene the Nominating Committee to consider the nomination of a qualified candidate who may become the Democratic nominee upon first filing with the Nominating Committee a Declaration of Candidacy form for such office.

Waivers: The Nominating Committee shall seek appropriate waivers from the DPVA regarding expediting the time frames required by the Party Plan, if necessary.
