Staunton Democratic Committee
P.O. Box 152, Staunton, VA 24402
February 27, 2015
Dear Staunton Democrats,
This is another important election year! On November 3 all Virginia legislators come up for election, including our local delegate and our state senator, both Republicans. Bob Goodlatte, the Republican Congressman from this area since 1993, expects to be reelected in 2016. To overcome these incumbents we need to identify strong Democratic candidates and support their campaigns as early as possible. This requires effective publicity, voter contact, close coordination with candidates, and financial support. We know many of you don’t have the time to make phone calls and attend rallies, but you can help by voting, urging your friends to vote, and by responding to this appeal for dues and donations.
An ongoing SDC objective is to reach out to citizens who are undecided or apathetic, but who agree with or benefit from Democratic principles of government. This committee needs to find ways to communicate with them and other like-minded people, to discuss what the problems are and what needs to be done. If you have suggestions for us please come to our monthly meeting, which is open to the public.
Campaign support and outreach are not possible without an administrative structure. The SDC is part of the state Democratic Party and as such it helps observe elections and recounts, it sponsors the Young Democrats, encourages voter registration, and works with Democrats statewide. Your dues help pay for the headquarters at 2507 North Augusta Street, for the website, insurance, and other expenses. Volunteers carry out the administrative work and maintain a Democratic presence at civic events throughout the year, such as the Augusta County Fair, the African-American Festival, and the 4th of July.
The SDC recently joined with other Democratic committees to inform Richmond of the strong opposition in this area to construction of the Atlantic Coast Pipeline. Democrats are diverse, so that you may not always agree with all points of view. However, we are an inclusive, bottom-up organization, in contrast to the Tea Party and the Republican right wing, who rigidly follow their party line.
Please give as generously as you can. We need your dues, and also additional donations, to help weaken the grip of one-party rule. Please respond by March 15, 2015.
Kenneth L. Venable, Treasurer
